A Guide to Dog Vaccines

Dogs are susceptible to disease just as humans are; the diseases might be different, but the prevention is the same. Talk with your vet and make sure your dog is getting each of these important vaccines.

Vaccine: Infectious Hepatitis

Why It’s Important: Protects against hepatitis and kennel cough. This vaccine is incorporated into the DHPP shot.

When Your Dog Needs It: 8 to 12 weeks of age, again at 16 weeks. Recommended that a booster is given one year from the last vaccine.

Vaccine: Canine Parvovirus

Why It’s Important: Parvo is a contagious virus that can cause death via intestinal distress or cardiovascular failure. Parvo is very dangerous to dogs but is not dangerous to humans.

When Your Dog Needs It: 6 to 8 weeks of age, then every three to four weeks until the dog is 12 to 14 weeks old. Boosters are recommended every three years.

Vaccine: Canine Distemper

Why It’s Important: Canine Distemper is deadly to dogs and can spread easily. This vaccine is often combined with a measles vaccine for increased effectiveness. It should not be administered at the same time as the Parvovirus vaccine.

When Your Dog Needs It: Just after weaning

Vaccine: Rabies

Why It’s Important: Rabies vaccines are regulated by law. This vaccine is especially important because rabies can be transmitted to humans.

When Your Dog Needs It: 3 to 6 months of age for the first shot, with a booster given at 15 months. Some laws require boosters every year; some require them every three years.
